Urban Astronaut

A mechanical rig built to fly a person without wires, in such a way that they can take giant leaps as they travel down a road.

The first production the rig was intended and used for was "Up, up and away" where a boy holding a red balloon floats up into the air for an adventure in amongst the clouds.

The beginnings of assembly.

Parallel head joint mechanism.

Main frame shaping up.

Precision and heavy duty bearings and steering mount for each wheel.

All wheel steering and disc brakes.

Finished rig featuring specially adapted quick connect and release trapeze harness (after double locks released).

First rehearsals with the rig in studio.

The moment Mark Worth of Highly Sprung Performance meets television Producer and Screenwriter Sir Philip Redmond CBE. This was the day after Coventry found out it had been awarded the prestigious title of City of Culture for 2021.

For the most part this rig has been key to the outdoor performance "Urban Astronaut" which was part of the brief at the start. This is a stunning performance that always captivates the audience. A tale of hope and of how the human race might just be able to save the planet. To date Highly Sprung have toured for 5 summers with the flying rig in the UK and Europe.
