Bicycle Sculpture Concept

This project was the development of a concept and visuals to illustrate a potential public realm sculpture. The central idea was to somehow chart the evolution of the bicycle from it's early days through to the modern bike of today. The key theme was realised with the incorporation of 5 distinct stages in the development of the bicycle. Particularly interesting and a point to be celebrated was the fact that the last major shift in design of bicycle took place in Coventry at the hands of the inventor and industrialist John Kemp Starley. The Cycles that JK.Starley developed in the 1880's culminated in his Rover Safety Bicycle. This cycle was quite different at the time and was much easier and safer to ride. Interestingly the overall design of the modern bike remains much the same as the Rover Safety bicycle of 1885.

Playing around with ideas around the theme of morphing. Going in the direction of a flowing organic morphed version.

Playing with the notion of the 5 separate bikes / leaves.

One idea was to hang the work from the ceiling. It would take up less space but would have been less approachable.

This idea was exploring the idea of the work being more interactive in that the audience would have been able to walk through the work.

Final concept showing 5 stages in the evolution of the bicycle. The main panels would be made up from transparent LCD screens displaying historical as well as current information. The idea was that the screens could also be interactive elements and could react to visitor inputs showing local information such as train timetables and interesting web connected data like "Worldometers" statistics etc.    For instance this : https://www.worldometers.info/bicycles/
